- Our full service adventure resort offers onsite camping and lodging
Get away on a unique family vacation in Massachusetts – go kayaking! Our Family Kayak Weeks are full of family fun on the water as you learn the great lifelong sport of kayaking. This week-long active family vacation is designed with a variety of participation options to accommodate gung-ho beginning kayakers as well as their more cautious family members.
Students may choose either standard whitewater kayaks or sit-on-top kayaks for those who are not comfortable using a spray skirt. At the beginning of the week, we will cover the basics of kayaking on flat and moving water. As the week progresses you will have a chance to sharpen your moving water skills, learning the essentials of maneuvering your kayak as we move into class II whitewater. The finale of our week will be an all-day river run on the Deerfield River.
Family members who elect not to participate in the kayaking on a given day may raft or bike instead. Come join us and other families who want to experience adventure together!
WHAT TO EXPECT AND HOW TO PREPARE
Goal of the clinic:
To introduce the great sport of whitewater kayaking to families and teach the basic techniques for safe paddling.
Class Size: Instructor-to-student ratio: 1:4; Max. clinic size: 12
Who should take the clinic:
To take this course you should be in reasonable physical condition, be comfortable in the water, and have an interest in paddling. To take this clinic, you must have at least one adult and one child (under 18). Our minimum age for this clinic is 10
What will be covered:
After introducing the sport and the equipment, we will get our first taste of the boats in the security of a pond where we can practice exiting and leaning the canoe or kayak, and learn the basic strokes, including sweep strokes, forward strokes, draws, and braces. Once people are comfortable in the boats, we will head to moving water where we will introduce river maneuvers such as the eddy turn, peel out, and ferry. On the second day and throughout the week, we will continue to work on new skills as participants become more comfortable on the river and more confident in their boats.
