KAYAKING FOR BEGINNERS: 3-Day Novice Kayak Clinic

Top 3 Reasons to Go
  1. A great way to build a solid foundation in the sport of whitewater kayaking.
  2. Our friendly professional instructors are ACA certified and love passing on their passion for the sport. Our ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students assures lots of personal attention.
  3. Our full service adventure resort offers onsite camping and lodging

Our three-day kayaking lesson for beginners provides an introduction to kayaking and a solid base from which to move into more advanced kayaking. Spending the first morning in the secure learning environment of a pond, we progress gradually to moving water and finally to class II whitewater kayaking. Three-day clinics give you more time to spend kayaking on whitewater and honing the skills you learn in the first two days. These clinics also get more into surfing in kayaks on mild whitewater and we spend time working on the basics of rolling your kayak.

A whitewater kayak is just like an extension of your body. It fits snugly to give you maximum control and maneuverability.  As in our two-day kayaking clinic, after introducing you to the sport of kayaking and to your equipment, we get our first taste of paddling in the security of a pond. We start by teaching you to safely exit the kayak when upside down.  Then we move on to leaning and basic strokes, including sweep strokes, forward strokes, draws and braces.

Once everyone is comfortable in their boats, we head to moving water where we introduce river maneuvers such as the eddy turn, peel out and ferry. On the second day we continue to work on river maneuvers and we end the day by running a several-mile-long, Class I-II section of river.  Our third day is spent on basic surfing, rolling and continuing to practice your techniques as you gain increasing confidence paddling the rapids of the Deerfield.

“I don't think you've ever had a group come away happier from a class than our group was that night! We went back to my place, and we all critiqued ourselves and each other so we would remember what to remind each other of.  Then we watched tons of video footage as we tried to relate what we had learned to watching other paddlers running the gnar.  Every one of us felt that we had learned a ton, and that it had really increased our confidence.  People kept walking around the house going "What an AWESOME day". “
